8. GEOCHEMISTRY AND PETROLOGY

GP80G: Geochemistry and Petrology (general session)
Convenors: Attila DEMÉNY, Hilary DOWNES, Friedrich KOLLER
Keynote: Sue O'REILLY

GP81: Volcanoes: The mineral factory
Convenors
: Alexandru SZAKÁCS, Masaaki SHIMIZU, Yuri TARAN
Keynote:
Stanislav K. FILATOV, Invited: Yasushi WATANABE
Sponsored by
: IMA Commission on Ore Mineralogy (IMA-COM)
Brief description of the session:

The session addresses all topics related to mineral occurrence and genesis in volcanic environments, including rock-forming minerals, minerals of the hydrothermal alteration, ore minerals and minerals formed from volcanic and post-volcanic exhalations.
Show/Hide Rational...

GP82: Alkaline rocks/kimberlites/carbonatites
Convenors:
Frances WALL, Hilary DOWNES, Attila DEMÉNY, Csaba SZABÓ
Keynote:
Ken BAILEY
Brief description of the session:

The session will deal with alkaline rocks, kimberlites and carbonatites, including explosive carbonatitic volcanism, mantle metasomatism and the relationship between kimberlites and carbonatites.
Show/Hide Rational...

GP83: Ophiolites: From spreading to emplacement
Convenors
: Volker HÖCK, Osman PARLAK, Friedrich KOLLER
Keynote:
Julian A. PEARCE
Brief description of the session:

The existence of former oceans is defined by fragments of ophiolite complexes situated within orogens. Thus, obducted ophiolites mark suture zones between colliding continental blocks enabling the reconstruction of the geometric and physical conditions of former oceanic basins.
Show/Hide Rational...

GP84: Decoding P-T-t-d evolution in mountain belts: Significance for geodynamics
Convenors
: Roland OBERHÄNSLI, Romain BOUSQUET, Friedrich KOLLER
Brief description of the session:

Metamorphic petrology and petrophysics together with new structural, isotope geochemical and geophysical investigations of the Tethys realm (Alpino- Carpathian belt) contribute to a better understanding of processes relevant to the formation of the major Tertiary orogen shaping today's European plate.
Show/Hide Rational...

GP85: Jadeitites and their record of subduction zone processes
Convenors
: George E. HARLOW, Sorena S. SORENSEN, Tatsuki TSUJIMORI
Keynote:
George HARLOW, Invited: Tadao NISHIYAMA
Brief description of the session:

This session will address the recent progress in finding new occurrences and on an improved understanding of jadeitites and their origin in subduction zones and mélange formation.
Show/Hide Rational...

GP86: From gemstones to cell phones: The importance of pegmatites to society
Convenors
: Robert LINNEN, Lee GROAT, Encarnación RODA-ROBLES
Keynote:
Rainer THOMAS, Invited: William SIMMONS
Brief description of the session:

Pegmatites are exploited for a number of commodities including gemstones, ceramics, Li, Ta, Cs and other rare elements. This session is open to all contributions on the mineralogy, petrology and genesis of pegmatites
Show/Hide Rational...

RELATED CLAY SCIENCE SESSIONS

GP87C3: Geology of clays
Convenors: Béla RAUCSIK, Jan ŚRODOŃ
Invited:
Jean Francois DECONINCK
Brief description of the session:

This session is dedicated to clay minerals as proxies of the geological processes through time and geodynamic events. We welcome contributions about the significance of clay minerals in various geological processes and environments.
Show/Hide Rational...

GP88C8: Weathering, soils and paleosol clays
Convenors: Géza SZENDREI, Tatiana V. ALEKSEEVA
Invited:
Tatiana ALEKSEEVA
Brief description of the session:

Some of the main topics covered by this session refer to: weathering and clay minerals behavior in soils and paleosols; determination of clays properties related to applied soil science; clay minerals - soil organic matter and living organisms interactions; clay minerals as indicators of climate and paleoclimate.
