Scientific focus (keywords): strata-bound tungsten deposits; ore genesis; Eastern Alps; Tauern window; mineral processing of tungsten ores

The scheelite deposit Felbertal, located south of Mittersill, Salzburg province, Austria, is one of the biggest producing tungsten mines in the world. It has long been regarded as the type locality of strata-bound tungsten deposits although the genetic concepts (syngenetic exhalative-hydrothermal vs. granite-related magmatic hydrothermal) and the age of mineralisation are still debated.

Key features of tungsten mineralisation and its geological setting will be seen on this excursion and the genesis of this ore deposit will be re-evaluated on the basis of new mineralogical, geochemical and geochronological data. Aspects of the mineral processing of scheelite ores will complement the programme.

Daily programme:

Day 1 (18 Aug): Salzburg: afternoon meeting, travel to Mittersill - Mittersill: accommodation (110 km, 2 hours)

Day 2 (19 Aug): Mittersill: visit of relevant exposures of the different geological units and ore bodies in the operating underground mine (morning) and in the former open pit (afternoon); return to accommodation

Day 3 (20 Aug): Mittersill: visit of the beneficiation plant & tailings management facilities (morning) -  ending: Mittersill (around 12.30). Travel to Budapest (~540 km) is not included!
